When upgrading ESC and motor, match your voltage to your battery setup. A 4S-rated combo won't survive 6S. Look for ESCs with active freewheeling and dynamic braking for better control. Motor kV rating affects speed vs torque — higher kV means more top speed, lower kV means more torque. For bashing, a lower kV motor with a high-quality ESC generally gives you better overall punch and efficiency than chasing top speed.
